Qube Employee Spotlight: Nolan Osiowy - Helping Customers Unlock the Power of Emissions Monitoring

Career Journey:
Originally from Calgary, Nolan pursued a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Calgary. Even during his studies, Nolan was drawn to the intersection of engineering, environmental science, and energy - working summer roles at oil and gas operators in northern Alberta and BC.

"My interest in sustainable development started right from university," Nolan explains. "I was part of a club called the Fuse Collective that brought together engineers, environmentalists, and economists to learn about the real-world challenges and innovations happening in the industry."

This interdisciplinary experience proved invaluable when Nolan joined Qube after a brief stint in warehouse robotics. As a Customer Success Manager, Nolan works closely with energy operators to design and implement their emissions monitoring deployments.

Typical Day/Week:
"A typical day for me involves checking our dashboard for any new device installations, ensuring the data is flowing correctly, and then working on deployment plans," Nolan says. "This involves finding the right locations for our sensors based on factors like wind patterns, equipment layout, and the client's budget."

Nolan's engineering background and customer-centric mindset have been instrumental in streamlining Qube's deployment process. He worked with the product team to automate many of the repetitive tasks, freeing up time to focus on higher-value activities.

Highlights and Challenges:
"I've always felt that if I'm copying and pasting things, there's probably a better way to do it," Nolan notes. "So I try to look for ways to make the process more efficient, whether that's export templates or integrating our systems more tightly."

Beyond his work, Nolan is passionate about maintaining a healthy work-life balance, with yoga being a cornerstone of his routine for the past several years. "Yoga has been life-changing for me," he explains. "It's a way to step back, not take myself too seriously, and find that mental reset, which is so important when you're tackling complex problems day-to-day."

Advice for Others:
"I think the first thing was to get the easy stuff right," Nolan shares. "Be on time to meetings, and if they reach out with an ask, reply right away. If it's a small ask and you do it right away rather than just adding it to the hopper, they always notice and appreciate it."

"Something I am working on more is relying less on PowerPoint for updates. I think PowerPoint is good to guide the discussion but if you rely on it too much it turns into a lecture. Being prepared and proficient with our system itself is a better way to talk with customers about their data and have them feel more engaged. This helps keep it light and a lot more personable where I feel more confident and can go with the conversation wherever it leads."

Nolan's ability to blend technical expertise, customer empathy, and a commitment to continuous improvement makes him a valued asset to the Qube team. As the company continues to grow, leaders like Nolan will play a crucial role in driving the energy industry's transition towards more sustainable practices.
