Spotlight on Jarett Henry: From Strategy Consulting to New Market Development at Qube Technologies

At Qube Technologies, we thrive on the diverse backgrounds and expertise of our team members. This month, we feature Jarett Henry, whose unique journey from strategy consulting to exploring new markets at Qube highlights his adaptability and dedication to making a positive impact.

A Meandering Journey to Qube

Jarett’s path to Qube Technologies was anything but linear. He began his academic journey with an undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Calgary. From there, he spent three years as a strategy consultant at Bain and Company in Chicago. During this time, he also undertook a six-month externship at the Gates Foundation in Seattle, working on the Emergency Response team.

After Bain, Jarett took a three-month road trip around North America, reflecting on his next steps. This period of exploration led him to Boston, where he joined Bridgespan, a nonprofit consultancy focused on social impact. Here, he worked with various nonprofits, foundations, and philanthropists, blending business strategy with social impact.

Despite these enriching experiences, Jarett sought a role that combined business strategy, social impact, and operational involvement. A mutual friend introduced him to Eric at Qube Technologies, and the alignment of values and opportunity led him to join the team.

Day-to-Day at Qube Technologies

Jarett’s current role focuses on exploring new markets beyond the traditional upstream oil and gas sector. His work involves investigating opportunities in landfills, biogas, renewable natural gas, gas distribution, and mining. He spends his days learning about these markets, engaging with stakeholders, and tailoring Qube’s products to meet their specific needs.

A significant part of Jarett’s job is having conversations with stakeholders, asking questions, and understanding their unique challenges. This approach allows Qube to refine its offerings and ensure they are truly beneficial to new market segments.

Proud Achievements

Reflecting on his earlier roles, Jarett fondly recalls his time at Bridgespan, where he worked with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America on their five-year strategic plan and volunteer recruitment strategy. This experience was particularly rewarding, as it combined strategic planning with meaningful social impact.

At Qube, Jarett is proud of the first article he contributed to, a case study on a pilot with Roeslein. Although he credits Gage and Kathleen for the actual work, Jarett enjoyed analyzing the data and telling the story of how continuous monitoring had both environmental and financial benefits.

Overcoming Challenges

Jarett acknowledges the privilege and support that have helped him navigate his career. One personal challenge he continues to manage is a long-term disability resulting from a severe concussion in June 2020. This condition causes motion sickness and cognitive fatigue during prolonged reading and research. To cope, Jarett uses an E-ink tablet for his notes and reading, allowing him to remain productive without worsening his symptoms.

Fun Facts and Personal Interests

Jarett is a man of intriguing contrasts. On one hand, he loves trail running, backcountry camping, and skiing. On the other hand, he can be a dedicated couch potato, devouring books for hours. A fun fact about Jarett is that he once ran a trail marathon fueled solely by maple syrup. He has also spent a night in an igloo, enduring temperatures as low as -35 degrees Celsius.

Advice for Aspiring Professionals

For those looking to enter the startup world or consulting, Jarett emphasizes the importance of being comfortable with ambiguity. He recommends not being afraid of asking questions and making mistakes, as these are essential for learning and growth. Jarett also encourages paying attention to activities that either energize or drain you, and to steer your career towards those that bring you joy and fulfillment.

Jarett Henry’s journey from strategy consulting to new market development at Qube Technologies is a testament to his adaptability, resilience, and commitment to making a difference. His ability to blend business strategy with operational involvement has already made a significant impact at Qube, and we look forward to seeing how he continues to drive innovation and growth in new markets.
