Spotlight on Everett: From Environmental Consultant to Director of Data Science

At Qube Technologies, we are proud of our talented team members who drive innovation and excellence in everything we do. This month, we spotlight Everett, our Director of Data Science, whose journey through the realms of environmental science, data analytics, and machine learning has been nothing short of inspiring.

A Passion for Environmental Science and Data Analytics

Everett’s professional journey began with a solid foundation in environmental science and physics, which he pursued during his undergraduate studies. His early career as an environmental consultant focused on liability estimation in the upstream oil and gas industry. During this time, Everett discovered his passion for analytics. This newfound interest led him to pursue a Master’s in Analytics from Georgia Tech, where he honed his skills in machine learning and optimization.

From Consultant to Data Scientist at ConocoPhillips

After completing his Master’s, Everett joined ConocoPhillips Canada as a data scientist. In this role, he applied his advanced analytical skills to optimize operations. Everett quickly realized the importance of collaboration between data scientists and subject matter experts. He found that the most impactful projects were those where engineers and data scientists worked closely together, bridging the gap between theoretical models and real-world applications.

Joining Qube Technologies: A Serendipitous Move

Everett’s transition to Qube Technologies was sparked by a combination of curiosity and opportunity. Intrigued by a job posting for a machine learning architect and encouraged by his father, who had previously worked with Qube’s CTO, Greg, Everett decided to apply. Three years later, he is a pivotal part of our team, driving innovations that reduce emissions and improve environmental outcomes.

A Day in the Life: Director of Data Science

As the Director of Data Science, Everett’s days are filled with a mix of strategic planning, team collaboration, and technical problem-solving. He translates strategic guidance from the executive team into actionable initiatives, supports his team through one-on-one meetings, and often steps in to troubleshoot technical issues. Despite the hectic schedule, Everett finds joy in the occasional technical work and takes pride in protecting his team’s time from distractions.

Proud Projects and Professional Challenges

One of Everett’s proudest achievements at Qube is building the infrastructure that runs our models on AWS. This robust system has scaled with the company’s growth and remains a testament to his technical expertise. Another highlight is his work on plume visualization, which will soon be available to clients, showcasing some of the best designs and code he has written.

However, Everett acknowledges that his journey has not been without challenges. Effective communication, particularly in explaining complex data science concepts to non-technical stakeholders, has been a recurring hurdle. Additionally, transitioning from a technical role to a leadership position required him to develop new skills and adapt to different responsibilities.

Advice for Aspiring Data Scientists

For those looking to enter the field of data science, especially within the oil and gas industry, Everett offers valuable advice: focus on simple, robust solutions rather than flashy, complex methodologies. He emphasizes that a deep understanding of business needs and data quality is crucial, and that success often comes from straightforward, well-executed approaches. Everett’s journey underscores that a PhD is not a prerequisite for success; a willingness to learn and adapt is far more important.

Life Beyond Data Science

Outside of work, Everett enjoys a balance of winter curling and summer gardening. His garden, filled with raspberries, garlic, and a variety of vegetables, is a source of relaxation and pride. Everett’s passion for gardening mirrors his professional approach: meticulous planning, continuous learning, and the joy of seeing the fruits of his labor.

Everett’s story is a testament to the power of curiosity, continuous learning, and the importance of collaboration. From environmental consulting to leading data science initiatives at Qube, his journey highlights the intersection of technology and environmental stewardship. We are proud to have Everett as part of our team, driving innovations that make a difference.
